This is our logo. It was designed soon after our establishment in 1999 by a local sculptor, Catharni Stern, and portrays seven men in one waistcoat. It is based on the 18th century tale of a very fat man, Edward Bright, who then lived in Maldon, and died weighing 44 stone 6lbs. A wag in a local pub tempted an inveterate gambler with a bet that seven hundred men would fit into Bright’s waistcoat. The bet was lost because seven men from the Dengie Hundred fitted into the waistcoat. A “Hundred” is an ancient name for a measure of land, still used in parts of Essex, probably akin to a “shire county” nowadays.
