From the Chair
From the Chair
(Owing to the current ill-health of Mike, our Chairman, I have penned this introduction. Jim)
I should start with a message for our chairman. Mike – we are all concerned for you and your speedy recovery. When ramblers meet, the first question always is “Any news of Mike?” Keep safe!
Writing this in our current heat wave, it is easy to forget the less pleasant weather we have experienced. This was particularly so on our YHA holiday in Louth in Lincolnshire during the Whit weekend. Although everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves our Saturday walk took place in persistent drizzle and on Sunday we walked through some major squalls. Rod must be thanked for selecting such a good venue and the three pubs where we enjoyed a variety of evening meals.
Sunday 20 June dawned bright, breezy and dry – ideal weather for our second Dengie Dawdle, this time from the Memorial Hall, Little Baddow. Numbers were down on last year, partly because the date had to be changed, but 20 entries were attracted, 12 from other groups. Times for completing the 11.5 miles circuit ranged from 4 hours to almost 6. Those participating asked for a repeat next year and were grateful to Wendy for her cream tea on their return to the hall.
Can I make a plea please for you to make every effort to attend our AGM on 25 October. Details are in the agenda enclosed with this newsletter.
The committee are very discouraged when, having prepared their reports for members, only they and their partners turn up. Attending the AGM does not necessarily mean that you will be asked to do a job!
There is an opportunity at the end of the meeting for informal discussion and sampling the excellent beer produced on the premises of the Blue Boar.
Our constitution requires our chairman and secretary to retire after a three-year term. This means that we will be seeking replacements for Mike Richards (chairman) and Cyril Bridle (secretary) who have both served three years.
